Sergio Scabar

Sergio Scabar was born in Ronchi dei Legionari (Gorizia) in 1946, where he lives and works.
He began working with photography in 1964. From 1966 to 1974 he participated in national and international competitions, primarily using photography as reportage or as a mean for telling stories. In the 1980’s his research took a completely different direction; the human figure was no longer a part of his work, instead he concentrated on nature and the conceptual. With the piece “Il teatro delle cose”, in 1996, he began to use a type of alchemical printing of silver salts to create an “one off” print. This unusual method, focusing on dark shades, stands out compared to his previous work: there is a contact with the materials, a re-appropriation of techniques, meticulousness and the dedication of time found in the work of craftsmen and the use of chemical sensorial relationships which come together in a quest for the essence of creativity.
In 2003, Craf awarded him the prize “Friuli Venezia Giulia Fotografia”.
